MEH High Voltage Electrode Boiler for offshore and refinery installations
Zero Emission Heat Generation
As more offshore fields are connected to power from shore, the opportunity to install an Electrical High Voltage Boiler (MEH) instead of traditional gas- or oil-fired boilers has increased. Offshore installations require large amounts of heat in the form of steam or hot water to stay in operation, and by switching to MEH, emissions to the atmosphere are significantly reduced.

Key advantages
- Direct connection to existing grid within the range 6kV -24kV. No additional trafo needed.
- 99.9% efficiency
- Compact design - up to 70 MW in a single unit.
- From cold to full load in less than 5 minutes.
- From minimum load to full load in 30 seconds
The electrode boiler has been developed over decades with a strong focus on reliability and safety. This design results in almost zero earth current and no electrode wear, keeping maintenance requirements to a minimum, only around three days per year on average.
The MEH versions available:
- For fixed and floating installations
- For hot water and steam purposes
- Indoor or outdoor
- Safe and hazardous area
The first offshore delivery of a high voltage boiler was made in 2009 to Bergesen Offshore. The 8 MW, 190°C hot water boiler operates as a peak load heater in the FPSO’s heating medium system, which uses WHRUs as its main heat source. The turnkey delivery was assembled on a skid suitable for rough outdoor environments and EX certified for Zone II.
For the Johan Sverdrup field, one of the largest developments on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the heating medium system is heated by two High Voltage Electrode Boilers supplied by PARAT. The turnkey skid assembly includes 2 × 12 MW boilers with heat exchangers, pumps, water treatment, and control systems.Equinor reports that electrification of the field will reduce total CO₂ emissions by 460,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to the annual emissions of 230,000 private cars.

Our turnkey philosophy ensures quick, safe, and efficient installation and start-up, combined with reliable operation throughout the vessel or rig’s lifetime.
Global service.
PARAT provides worldwide service for repairs, replacements, conversions, upgrades, and modifications. We carry out complete overhauls, system evaluations, and operational analyses to ensure every system performs at optimal efficiency.
Heating Medium
Topside processing facilities generally require a significant supply of energy in the form of heat. The most common distribution medium is hot water, which is easy to produce, transport, and operate with a lower safety risk than thermal oil or high-pressure steam.PARAT has extensive experience designing and delivering heating medium modules and packages for offshore integration. Provide your process criteria, and we will deliver the optimal solution for your requirements. We focus strongly on sustainability and recovery of waste heat.
We provide:
- Steam-based heating medium systems (for both hot water and thermal oil systems)
- Hot water systems up to 30 barg / 200°C
- Complete EPCIC delivery for all system types
Emission Free Conversion from POWER to HEAT
Sustainable power generation in upstream oil and gas is becoming increasingly important as reservoirs move into deeper waters and the hydrocarbons become heavier and more energy-intensive to process.Where feasible, replacing local offshore power generation with power supplied from external renewable sources, such as hydroelectric, wind, biomass, offshore wind farms, or wave power, is an effective way to reduce emissions. In such cases, onboard heat for process, cleaning, HVAC, and other systems must be generated electrically.
Benefits compared to traditional boilers:
- Save significant deck space
- Reduce operating weight
- Cut investment and installation cost
