Alholmens Kraft Invests in 2 x 60 MW Boilers from PARAT to Increase Energy Flexibility
Alholmens Kraft has decided to invest in two 60 MW high voltage electrode boilers from Parat Halvorsen at its power plant in Pietarsaari, Finland. The investment will enhance flexibility in heat and electricity production, strengthen security of supply and enable participation in electricity balancing and reserve markets.
The boilers will be integrated into the existing combined heat and power (CHP) facility located at the Alholmens Kraft and UPM Pietarsaari industrial site. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2026, with final commissioning planned for spring 2027.

REDUCING FUEL-BASED HEAT PRODUCTION THROUGH ELECTRIFICATION
The two 60 MW high voltage electrode boilers from Parat Halvorsen will operate at 15,75 kV and 20 barg.
The boilers will produce process steam and district heat when electricity prices are favourable. With nearly all electrical energy converted into heat, the solution offers very high operational efficiency. The boilers allow precise power control and can start and stop rapidly according to demand.
By integrating e-boilers into its CHP system, Alholmens Kraft gains the ability to:
- Reduce reliance on fuel-based combustion
- Optimize production based on electricity market conditions
- Increase operational flexibility
- Support grid stability through fast-response regulation
"Electric boilers are an important investment for us. They enable us to benefit from volatility in the electricity market and price fluctuations, while reducing the need for combustion at the power plant. The investment increases production flexibility as well as the security of heat and electricity supply. In addition, the electric boilers enhance our ability to regulate production and participate in balancing and reserve electricity markets."
- Björn Åkerlund, Managing Director at Oy Alholmens Kraft Ab
STRENGTHENING THE NORDIC ENERGY SYSTEM
Located at the UPM Pietarsaari mill site, Alholmens Kraft’s CHP plant plays a key role in regional energy supply. The integration of large-scale electric boilers demonstrates how established power producers can adapt to evolving electricity markets while reducing fuel-based heat production.
Parat Halvorsen is proud to serve as the main equipment supplier for this strategic investment, contributing proven high-voltage electrode technology to one of Finland’s most significant industrial energy sites.
