ŠKODA Energy strengthens power grid stability using Electrode boiler from PARAT
The innovative Power-to-Heat system produces environmentally friendly district heating, and at the same time serves as a buffer during peak loads in the public power grid. The first electrode boiler in Czech Republic that strengthens stability of the power grid and reduces risk of blackouts.

The 15 MW Electrode Boiler, designed by PARAT Halvorsen as, is connected to ŠKO-ENERGO’s modern thermal power station in Mladá Boleslav. The new system converts electrical energy into heat. The core is a cylindrical tank in which electrodes heat the water at a voltage of 6.3 kV. In ŠKO-ENERGO’s power-to-heat project, the PARAT Electrode Boiler is coupled to a heat exchanger that feeds the heat generated into the existing district heating system. The Energy Central is designed jointly by ŠKO-ENERGO and the energy supplier E.ON Czech Republic - also a shareholder in the company.

In addition to generating district heating, the capacity of the public electricity network can be regulated via the electrode boiler. If critical load peaks occur during periods of low consumption, the excess current is used to heat the boiler. In this way, the new system reduces the risk of blackouts and increases the security of the power supply in the Czech Republic and Europe.
PARAT has designed and developed the Electrode Boiler for Hot water with:
- 6,3kV and 15MW design
- Pressure/temperature - 10barg / 160°C
- Operating pressure/temperature - 6 barg / 140°C
PARAT Designed Control Panel and Control System with PLS Simatic S7-300 CPU315-F and Simatic TP1500 HMI touch panel, for easy and safe operation. Training of operator and maintain personnel at customer facilities.
Electrode boiler to be used as a part of ŠKO-ENERGO's green line for a cleaner future and less contamination, the boiler can also be used to regulate the grid and prevent imbalance.
